A Bishop’s Waltham man says he’s planning to run as an independent in next month’s General Election.

In a statement, Chris Barfoot, who uses the slogan “Make Alfred Great Again”, said: “Old friends, new friends, friends I have yet to find… I have been scrutinised by the ‘powers that be’ and am happy to announce that I am officially standing as an Independent Member of Parliament for the Constituency of Winchester.

“650 constituencies- 650 MPs (usually) squabbling in the House of Commons… Listen… It doesn’t matter who will be running the country on the 4th of July… Choose the person- who you know- wants to take care of you and yours.

“I have no party allegiance- my boss will be you! I may not attend many fetes but that’s because I will be working to better your fates.

“Give me your trust… I won’t let you down. X”

His leaflet says: “Whatever party is ‘running the country’ from July 4th, as an independent MP I will effectively be neutral and thus able to connect with everyone in Westminster.”

His policy pledges are:

  • “You pay your taxes and deserve to retain your public services without threat of restrictions.”
  • “Poverty in this era is a disgrace- we must seek to improve lives.”
  • “I’ll oversee deals that will create infrastructure & campaign for new estates to be sited in new towns.”
  • “Independent means not tied to a party. That means I work for you – 100%.”
