A popular county councillor is stepping down from his role due to illness.

Hugh Lumby, who represents the Meon Valley division, has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease.

Hugh, from Meonstoke, said: “It has been the privilege of my life to represent the area and our communities,” said Hugh, from Meonstoke.

“We have made progress for example on the motorbikes but there is still much to do which I shall have to leave to someone else.”

One local resident said: “Hugh has been a very effective, hardworking and well-liked councillor and he’ll be a tough act to follow.”

A by-election for his seat will take place in due course.
