Residents Evacuated And Key Road Closed In Swanmore Due To Gas Leak

By Times Reporter in Environment News on January 23, 2024

Some residents have been evacuated from their homes in Swanmore and a key road has been closed due to a gas leak.

Southern Gas Networks (SGN) says leak on a gas main in Church Road cannot be repaired so a whole section of pipe will have to be replaced.

The work is expected to take five days but the nearby Brickmakers Pub remains open as usual.

SGN’s Southern Repair Team said: “Due to multiple leaks/gas readings in buildings and properties, as a safety precaution we have evacuated properties in proximity to the leak location.

“We’ll also be closing the road between the entrance to the Brickmakers public house and the junction of Lower Chase.

“Residents of properties evacuated are being looked after by the team on site. Temporary hotel accommodation has been sorted for those residents affected including support with shopping vouchers and food vouchers/just eat as required. We have all their contact details, and the team will be keeping them updated as work progresses.”

“We are no longer able to repair the section of gas main leaking, replacement of this pipe is the only permanent solution to address the issuing of leaks on this gas main.”

Bus journeys to and from Bishop’s Waltham will are impacted as are families and children attending Swanmore Primary and Swanmore College.

Due to the location of the gas main in the road, a road closure is in place from the junction of Brickmakers public House and the Junction of Lower Chase. This means there is no through access along Church Road, a signed diversion route is in place. The Brickmakers Pub remains open as usual – access to the pub will be from the south side of Church Road.
